Winner of Community Services Industry Award 2006
The training was extensive and so well researched.  The knowledge I have gained is an asset to my working environment and the clients I work with.”

(The facilitators) were excellent. They did not make us feel like we are doing the wrong thing, but opened up constructive conversation which left us thinking!”

I appreciate the training which was needed sooner than I expected! It definitely gave me the confidence to talk to a young gay client who came in the week following the training.”
Workshop Participant (2006)

This session was invaluable!  Having this time with experts in the area was fantastic.  They really focused in on our service and made it relevant to our everyday business and the changes we could make (to policies and procedures) more achievable.”
Agency Manager (2006)

Our training sessions have an impact beyond the workplaces in which they’re completed.  Here’s a quote from an agency worker who contacted our Facilitators some months after completing Opening Closets:
I have a brother who is gay, but our parents are not supportive of him.  At our last family dinner, to which he was not invited, I brought my training manual and left it inconspicuously on the coffee table.  I saw my parents open it and browse through it while no one was looking.  Next time my brother was invited - with his partner.”

Training

Our award winning Opening Closets training package aims to help organisations tackle homophobia and improve their accessibility to gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender clients.

We offer full- or half-day training on diverse sexuality and gender (DSG) for staff and management and individual coaching sessions for management. The training package can be customised to the needs of specific workplaces.

Half- or full-day Opening Closets workshops will help you to:
  • Increase your knowledge of the needs of gay and transgender people
  • Understand your obligations under the revised Equal Opportunity legislation
  • Promote your service as a gay-friendly environment for staff and clients

  • The full-day workshop will:
  • Demonstrate how our attitudes and values impact on the people we work with - our clients and colleagues
  • Examine some of the myths about same sex attracted and gender diverse people
  • Provide participants with models and frameworks for understanding sexuality and gender
  • Look at how homophobia and transphobia operate at different levels in society
  • Provide participants with strategies for better supporting clients

  • The training includes:
  • Tailored workshops
  • Experienced facilitators
  • Resource kits
  • Agency Coaching
In addition to our Opening Closets workshops we can provide individual agency coaching to assist management to improve policies and procedures, making them more accessible to clients and staff who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.
